Since both data sources are maintained by the community or the operators, coverage is incomplete - if data is missing, that doesn't automatically mean there's no accessible access on site, just that it hasn't been recorded yet.

If you come across a particularly good or bad case of accessibility yourself, you can add it directly to OpenStreetMap (for example via the StreetComplete app) - which then benefits every app that uses this data, not just Elunio. Until the data improves, the practical advice remains: for important trips, call ahead or ask the operator directly if the app doesn't show a clear answer.

What "wheelchair-accessible" actually means at a charging station

Realistically, coverage won't improve overnight - it will happen gradually, first in urban areas and along heavily used long-distance routes, later in more rural regions too. A second trend likely to improve data quality over the medium term is the growing standardization of newly built charging infrastructure: as accessibility standards (such as maximum cable height or minimum parking space width) become mandatory in more countries, the variance between stations decreases, and existing tags reflect reality more accurately. Until then, the most pragmatic approach remains the one that already works today: treat app data as a valuable first signal, but back it up with a quick call or message to the operator for trips that matter.

Contributing to Better Data Yourself

Anyone who finds that an accessibility entry is outdated or wrong can correct it directly, without needing to know how to code. The easiest way is through the StreetComplete app: it shows open questions about nearby charging stations based on your location - for example whether a ramp exists or how high the charging socket is mounted - and automatically feeds the answer into the OpenStreetMap database. Alternatively, the same tag can be edited through the classic OpenStreetMap web interface (the iD editor), which takes a bit more familiarity but is just as effective. What matters is entering only what was actually observed on site - guesses or secondhand information should be avoided, since they tend to make data quality worse rather than better. Even a single corrected station helps not just the next person who arrives there, but every application that draws on the same OpenStreetMap data - Elunio included. That way, a single frustrating experience turns into a small but measurable contribution to a system that becomes more reliable for everyone.

What to Do If No Accessible Station Is Listed Nearby

Sometimes the accessibility filter shows no results, or only a handful, for a particular area - that doesn't necessarily mean there are no accessible cafes or restaurants there, only that accessibility hasn't yet been recorded in OpenStreetMap for those places. For the charging station itself, it's worth checking the access note in a case like this too. In that case, it's worth briefly turning off the filter, looking at the unlabeled stations, and forming a rough impression from photos (if available) or user reviews. Still, calling the operator remains the most reliable option: most charging network operators can tell you within a few minutes on the phone whether a given station has step-free access and enough space, even when that information isn't recorded anywhere online. Anyone who regularly travels through a particular region also benefits from entering the information they've gathered into OpenStreetMap themselves - so nobody else has to do the same research again. For trips where absolutely no uncertainty can be tolerated, it's worth contacting the operator directly early on - ideally a day ahead - or, if one exists, the local disability advocacy organization, which often already keeps its own informal list of verified stations.
